Trafalgar Square Trafalgar Square is in the centre of London. It is named in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. A statue of Lord Nelson, hero of the Napoleonic Wars, stands on a high column in the middle of the Square. The column is guarded by four bronze lions.

Westminster Abbey Westminster Abbey is a symbol of England. Westminster Abbey was built by King Edward in 1065. The coronation of all British Kings and Queens takes place in Westminster Abbey.

The Tower of London The Tower of London is the oldest palace in Europe, it was a fortress and a prison.

Buckingham Palace Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s London residence, when the flag is flying on the top the Queen is in.

Big Ben Big Ben is the name of the main bell in London, which began to work in 1859.

Задачи: Расширить знания о столице Великобритании Пробудить интерес к стране изучаемого языка: истории и культуре Великобритании — Совершенствовать коммуникативные навыки

A bus tour about the capital is an ideal way for short trips. Here is the bus called double-decker. It has two storeys , so from the top of it you can see the city center very well. YOU ARE WELCOME TO LONDON!

London is the capital of Great Britain. It is situated on the river Thames. The city is very old and beautiful. Traditionally London is divided into several parts: the City, Westminster, the West End and the East End. There are a lot of places to go. O ur excursion starts from the central square of London – Trafalgar Square.

Trafalgar Square Nelson Column It is the largest square of London. It is named in memory of Admiral Nelson’s victory in the battle of Trafalgar in 1805. And in the middle of the square you can see Nelson Column with a statue of Lord Nelson on the top.

Trafalgar Square National Gallery The main building of the square is the National Gallery . It is one of the best picture galleries in the world. As far as the entrance to the gallery is free, a great many tourists try to visit the museum.

The Houses of Parliament Let`s visit Westminster Abbey, which is situated in the district of Westminster. On the way to the Abbey we can see the Houses of Parliament . The country’s leaders speak at this place.

Big Ben The large clock in one of the towers of Houses of Parliament is Big Ben . You can hear the sound of Big Ben every hour in London. It got its name after Sir Benjamin Hall. He was a tall man, whose nickname was Big Ben. So people know this clock as Big Ben.

London Eye Opposite the Houses of Parliament you can see London Eye. You can take a ride and see London from above.

Westminster Abbey Westminster Abbey is a symbol of England. It is one of the oldest, most famous and beautiful churches in London. The coronation of all British Kings and Queens takes place here. Many great writers are buried here: for example Dickens and Kipling. The Abbey with its two tall towers is really wonderful.

London Parks Now we will make our way to Buckingham Palace and pass famous London parks. Five of London’s nine royal parks are in the very heart of the capital. They are St. Jame’s Park, Green Park, Regent’s Park, Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens. Each has its own character.

Hyde Park The largest park is Hyde Park. It is known for its Speaker’s Corner, where anyone can stand up and say what he wants.

Buckingham Palace The Queen of England lives in Buckingham Palace. When she is inside you can see the flag over it. In front of the palace there is the Queen Victoria Memorial. Victoria was the first monarch who began to live in this building.

Buckingham Palace There is an amazing daily ceremony, which takes place at 11.30. A lot of people watch Changing the Guards in front of the Palace.

Piccadilly Circus And now we are going to the Tower of London. Look on the right. We are passing Piccadilly Circus. It’s a meeting point of six streets.

Tower Bridge Now we are passing the river Thames. There are 27 bridges over the Thames and 8 tunnels under the river. The most famous bridge is Tower Bridge.

The Tower of London The Tower of London was built by William the Conqueror in 1066. It was a fortress, a palace and a prison. Now it is a museum. The most famous things in the Tower of London are the Crown Jewels. They have the biggest diamond in the world – the «Star of Africa».

The Tower of London The guards in the Tower of London are called Beefeaters. Ravens always live in the Tower of London. The legend says that if they fly away, Britain will fall, that’s why ravens’ wings are cut.

Covent Garden The last point of our excursion is Covent Garden. It is the biggest cultural and shopping center in Britain. It was officially established by King Charles II in 1670 as a market place. Now it is a lively shopping area with a lot of restaurants and cafes.

Our visit to London has finished. H ope you have enjoyed it. Have a good time! By the way, now it’s 5 o’clock. In England there is a tradition: so-called “5 o’clock tea”. You may have it just here in some café of Covent Garden. After a cup of tea you may do the shopping here.

The Clock Tower of the Palace of Westminster is named Saint Stephen’s Tower. It is known as the Big Ben. The tower is one of London’s most famous landmarks. BIG BEN

The clock inside the tower was the world’s largest when it was put in the middle of the 19th century. The name Big Ben refers to the clock’s hour bell, the largest of the clock’s five bells. The clock was the largest in the world and is still the largest in Great-Britain. The clock faces have a diameter of almost 25ft (7.5m). BIG BEN

Buckingham Palace is the Queen’s official and main royal London home. It has been the official London residence of Britain’s monarchy since 1837. Queen Victoria was the first monarch to live there. BUCKINGHAM PALACE

Who lives in Buckingham Palace today? Buckingham Palace is not only the home of the Queen and Prince Philip . It is also the London residence of the Duke of York (Prince Andrew) and the Earl and Countess of Wessex (Prince Edward and his wife) and their daughter.

The Queen has other homes too including Windsor Castle and A flag on the Palace means that the Queen is at home. Balmoral in Scotland.

Changing of the Guard is a colorful ceremony when a new guard exchanges duty with the old guard. It lasts 30 minutes . The Guard at Buckingham Palace is called The Queen’s Guard and is devided into two divisions: the Buckingham Palace Division and the St. James’s Palace Division. CHANGING OF THE GUARD

St. Paul’s Cathedral has had an eventful history. Five different churches were built at this site. The first church of the apostle Paul, dates back to 604 AD when King Ethelbert of Kent built a wooden church. At the end of the 7th century, the church was built in stone by Erkenwald , Bishop of London. ST.PAUL’S CATHEDRAL

In 962 and again in 1087, the cathedral was destroyed by fire, but each time it was rebuilt. By that time, it had become one of the largest cathedrals in Europe. The dome is 111 meters (366 ft) high and 66,000 ton in weight . Eight arches support the dome. On top of the dome is a large lantern . The architect of the present cathedral is Sir Christopher Wren. THE TOWER OF LONDON The Tower of London was originally built by William the Conqueror in 1066. It is a very big castle. It is the oldest place in London. It was a castle, a zoo, a prison and a museum.

The Tower bridge was designed by Horace Jones and built in 1894. Nearly 450 workers were involved in the construction of the 265 meter long bridge. At the time many people disliked its Victorian Gothic design, but over time the bridge became one of London’s most famous symbols. THE TOWER BRIDGE

Taking photographs of the Tower bridge is a favorite London tourist activity, but you can also go inside the bridge, where you’ll have a magnificent view over London from the walkway between the two bridge towers. The 2012 Olympic rings are pictured on Tower Bridge in central London. THE TOWER BRIDGE

The name ‘Piccadilly’ originates from a 17th century frilled collar named piccalilli. Roger Baker, a tailor who became rich making piccadils lived in the area. The word ‘Circus’ refers to the round square. PICCADILLY CIRCUS

In 1880-ies the square became a busy traffic junction. This made Piccadilly Circus attractive for advertisers, who installed London’s first illuminated billboards here in 1895. For some time the square was surrounded by billboards, creating London’s version of Times Square, but currently only one building still carries large displays. PICCADILLY CIRCUS

The square was originally called Charing . Later it became known as Charing Cross, after a memorial cross on the square. The nearby underground station — is still named Charing Cross. TRAFALGAR SQUARE

The new design for a large square was done by the architect Sir Charles Barry, who is best known for his Houses of Parliament . TRAFALGAR SQUARE

In the center of the square there is the tall Nelson’s Column.It was built to commemorate the victory of Admiral Horatio Lord Nelson over the French fleet at the Battle of Trafalgar on the 21st of October 1805.
